Retail · Built for the trade

Web design for shops and independent retailers, from £395

Your regulars know where you are. The person who moved into the area last month does not, and they will decide where to spend their Saturday from a phone.

We build shop sites that win that decision: what you stock, hours that are right, where to park, and a reason to come back. Online selling only where it genuinely earns its place.

The honest version

A map pin is not a shop front

Most independent shops we look at have the same setup: a Google listing that somebody claimed years ago, a Facebook page with a post from last Christmas, and no website at all. It works, in the sense that regulars still come in. What it does not do is win anybody new, because a person deciding where to spend forty quid on a Saturday does about ninety seconds of research first, and there is nothing there for them to find.

The thing that changes is not the number of people searching. It is how many of them end up at your door rather than at the shop two streets over that looks like it is doing well. That is a presentation problem and it is fixable in a week.

What we build

What we would put on a shop's site

Built to get people through the door, not to turn you into a warehouse.

What you actually stock

Not a product database. The departments, the brands, the things worth crossing town for. Enough that somebody knows before they set off.

Opening hours that are right

Including bank holidays and the week between Christmas and New Year. Wrong hours cost you a customer and earn you a bad review.

Where to park

The single most common reason somebody does not come. Say where the car park is and what it costs. It sounds trivial and it is not.

What is new this week

A short, easily updated stock or news strip. It gives people a reason to come back to the site and a reason to come back to the shop.

Call and hold

Have you got it, can you put one aside. That phone call is the highest value thing a shop site produces and it should be one tap.

An online shop only if it earns its place

A few high-margin lines, click and collect, or nothing at all. We will tell you honestly which of those fits.

Getting found

Local search is the whole game for a shop

A person looking for a shop types the thing plus the town, or they type it and let the phone supply the town. Bike shop Eastleigh. Butchers near me. Record shop Southampton. Those searches put the map first, which is why your Google Business Profile matters as much as the site does, and why we set it up properly as part of a build rather than leaving it to you.

Underneath the map are the ordinary results, and that is where a site with real pages about real departments beats a single page that says welcome to our shop. A page about the thing you are known for will be found by people searching for that thing, and there is usually one per shop that nobody else in town does properly.

Reviews feed both. We build the ask into the site and into the after-sale, and we never invent a rating or print a star average we cannot evidence.

The upsell, stated plainly

When a shop should sell online, and when it should not

Online selling suits you if you have stock with decent margin that posts easily, or if people already ring up asking whether you can send one. It does not suit you if your margin is thin, your stock is heavy or perishable, or your day is already full. An online shop that takes four orders a month and eats your evenings is a worse business than no online shop at all, and we would rather say that now than sell you one.

Where it genuinely works, we build it: a real catalogue, real payments, click and collect if that suits you better than posting. That sits at the £1,200 end of our pricing and we would talk it through properly first. See our page on online shops for what that build actually involves.

We do not currently have an ecommerce client live, so we are selling that on what we can build rather than on somebody else's numbers. That is the honest position and you should hold us to it.

How it works

Built first, paid for after

Tell us about the shop and within 48 hours you get a link to a real site built for it, not a template with your name dropped in. If it is not right, say so and there is no cost and no chase. No card and no sales call.

Builds are £395, £650 or £1,200 depending on depth, and a build can be split into three payments, same price, no interest and no fees, within twelve months. You own the site.

Care plans are £45, £85 or £150 a month with no minimum term, and for a shop the useful part is usually somebody keeping hours, stock strips and seasonal changes current so the site does not go stale by March.

Questions

What shop owners ask us

I have a physical shop. Everybody who matters already knows where I am. Why do I need a website?

Because the people who matter to your next year do not know where you are yet, and they will not find out by walking past. Somebody new to the area searching for a gift shop, a bike shop, a butcher, a record shop, will get a map result and then they will look at whatever the map links to. If that is a Facebook page from 2019 they go to the shop that looks open, stocked and run by somebody who cares. The website is what turns a map listing into a visit.

Do I have to sell online? I do not want to be packing parcels every evening.

No, and we will not push you into it. A great many shops are better served by a site that makes people come in: what you stock, when you are open, where to park, what is new this week. If online selling later makes sense for a few high-margin lines, it can be added, and it does not have to mean your whole stock list. Plenty of shops sell six things online and everything else over the counter.

How much does a site for a shop cost?

£395 for a solid shop site: what you sell, opening hours that are actually right, where to find you, the news or stock updates that give people a reason to come back. £650 if you want more depth, more pages per department, or a stock highlight system you update yourself. £1,200 for something bigger, and that is usually where online selling and a proper product catalogue come in. A build can be split into three payments, same price, no interest and no fees, within twelve months.

How do I compete with Amazon?

Not on price, and not on range. On the things they genuinely cannot do: knowing what you are talking about, having it today, taking it back without an argument, and being a place in a town that people like. A shop website that leans on those wins the customer who has already decided they do not want to order from a warehouse. A shop website that tries to look like a warehouse loses them.

Do you have a retail client we can look at?

Not a shop, no, and we are not going to imply otherwise. Our live clients are service businesses: detailing, removals, building, carpentry, landscaping, cleaning, training, tutoring. What that means for you is that we have built a lot of sites whose job is to turn a local search into a booking, which is most of the job here too. The difference is stock and opening hours rather than a diary. Our work page is linked below and it labels concept builds as concepts.
