Photos that win jobs
Your photos are the proof. On a website, on your Google listing and on social, they are what a customer looks at before they decide to ring you. You don't need a camera or a photographer, just a phone and these ten habits.
Do these on every job
Wipe the lens first
A phone that lives in a work pocket has a greasy lens, and that haze is the most common reason a good job looks flat. Wipe it on your shirt before every set. It takes two seconds and fixes more photos than anything else on this page.
Shoot in daylight, without the flash
An overcast day is perfect: soft light, no harsh shadows. In strong sun, keep it behind you. Indoors, open the curtains and turn the big light on rather than using the flash, which flattens everything and bounces off gloss and glass.
Take the before, before you start
Before-and-afters sell work better than anything else, and the before is the one people forget. Take it the moment you arrive. Then take the after from the same spot, at the same height and angle, so the two line up.
Clear the frame
Tools, bins, cones, dust sheets and the customer's washing all pull the eye. Move them out, or step to one side so they are out of shot. Your van can stay in if it is clean and has your name on it.
Wide, then middle, then close
One shot of the whole job so people see the scale, one from a few steps away, and one close-up of the detail that shows the skill: the joint, the edge, the finish, the clean line. The close-up is what makes someone trust you with their house.
Hold the phone sideways for the website
Landscape photos fit a website and your Google listing best. Take one upright as well if you post to Instagram or Facebook stories. Keep the phone level, and use the grid lines in your camera settings if you have them.
Ask before you post someone's home
Ask the customer first. Most say yes, and it is their house. Keep house numbers, car registrations and faces out of shot unless they have said so. You and your team at work are great to show, with their OK too.
No filters, no stock photos
Straighten and crop, and leave it there. Heavy filters make real work look fake, and customers can spot a stock photo straight away. Your own ordinary photos of real jobs will always beat someone else's perfect one.
Send us the full-size file
WhatsApp shrinks photos when you send them normally. Attach them as a Document instead, or share an album from your phone, and we get them at full quality.
Twenty good ones beats two hundred
You don't need a photoshoot. Two or three good photos from every job you are proud of adds up quickly, and a steady trickle keeps your website and Google listing looking alive.
One set of photos, three places
- Your Google listing. Add a few after every job. The listing with the map is often the first thing a customer sees.
- Your website. The gallery, and the page for each service, so every service shows real work.
- Social. A before-and-after pair with one line about the job is a post most customers enjoy.
